‘Our Bahamaland’ – Together We Rise

Hurricane Dorian Donation Hub at Seaway Mall

(Welland, Ontario) September 12, 2019 – Hurricane Dorian was an extremely powerful, prolonged, and destructive tropical cyclone that devastated the northwestern Bahamas and caused significant damage to the Southeastern United States and Atlantic Canada. The hurricane caused catastrophic damage to Grand Bahama and the Abaco Islands, with at least 70,000 people left homeless.

This disaster hit close to home for a member of our maintenance team here at Seaway Mall. The week after Hurricane Dorian struck, we were approached by Christian Ching, one of Hurricane Dorian Clothes Drive Founders, asking for Seaway Mall’s support in collecting donations and emergency items for an existing Hurricane Relief Fundraiser.

The team of individuals organizing this Clothing Drive event consists of Rasa Burrows – Treasurer/Communications, Sharano Hanna – Graphic Designer, Christian Ching – Press Communication & Logistics, and Tatum Thompson – Packaging & Shipping.

This power team decided to act after watching their families, friends and other fellow Bahamians lose everything in the matter of two or three days. “The state of feeling helpless in a situation that holds extreme significance is the worst sentiment, especially, when there is so much to do” says Christian Ching, Press Communication & Logistics. “Watching close friends shed tears due to lack of communication with their families for 72 hours or more, has to be the most frightening and gloomy emotion a person can view as an outsider” he continues.

This weekend, September 14 & 15, this group will be at Seaway Mall collecting lightly used clothing and emergency items, listed below. If you can’t make it this weekend, there will be a grey bin outside of Customer Service this week where we are accepting donations.

  • Shoes
  • Clothing – new or lightly used
  • Non-Perishable Items
  • Diaper & Baby Products – New/Unopened Items
  • First-Aid Kits
  • Hygiene & Feminine Products
  • Water
  • Non-Prescription Pain Medications

Clothing/ Item donations will not be accepted after 5:00pm on Sunday, September 15.

Seaway Mall has reached out to Red Cross and will be collecting donations for the Hurricane Dorian Fund. All monetary donations will be collected from September 10 – October 10, 2019. Make your donation at Customer Service within mall hours via. Cash or Debit

After all donations have been collected, the items will be thoroughly sorted, packaged and delivered by Bahama homeowners, Ken and Fiona Williams. This Niagara couple will drive the donations down to Florida and they are taking them on a ferry to the islands. Cash donations will be provided to Red Cross for the Hurricane Dorian Relief Fund.
