The first half hour of Yoga will be a Yin style yoga which helps to gently lengthen and stretch muscles and fascia while focusing on proper belly breathing for deeper relaxation. This style of yoga is for every BODY type and yes, even those who have never practiced yoga before will be able to do the poses or the modifications offered by the teacher. We will be on our mats and start either sitting or lying down on our back and focusing on our breath first. Then, we move slowly and mindfully into a series of 6-8 poses holding each pose for 3-5 minutes. We finish in Savasana or Corpse pose lying on our back and returning to a relaxing, calming breath.
The next half hour is chair yoga. This is for all levels and every BODY type as the poses are practiced sitting in a chair. The first 5 minutes are for centering and grounding our attention on our breath so as to foster more peace and mental stillness and calm. We then practice about 10 poses, stretching the whole body from head to toe while seated or using the chair as support. Poses may vary from week to week but the slow and gentle pace while fostering awareness of body sensations will be consistent throughout.
