John O’Brien, resident of Stevensville, Ontario is the visionary and “imagineer” behind this rather peculiar world record attempt which is scheduled for June 22nd, 12:00 p.m. in the centre court at Seaway Mall, in Welland.
The President of the Seaway Mall, Mike Belcastro, along with representatives from the Welland Museum will be witnessing the formal count to validate the collection.
It all started when O’Brien acquired a private collection of over 5,000 salt and pepper shakers. Breaking the world record wasn’t even on his radar until it was discovered that the current record is held by LaVerne Tish from Pierce City, USA, totalling 6, 971 shakers. He continued to build the collection and now the total projected final count for this record attempt is close to 10,000. He was further inspired by his mother in law, whose passion for collecting salt and peppers has been the fuel of his sarcastic jokes at family dinners for years. O’Brien proclaims that the prize-winning moment so far has been when he announced to his mother in law that the world’s largest collection will now reside closer than she could have ever imagined, right in her own backyard!
