One CAN-ada can make a difference
One person can make a difference but a team working together can make something incredible. Joining together the Hope Centre, the Salvation Army, the Open Arms Mission along with Seaway Mall has been the method behind the One CAN-ada campaign running for the month of May. The campaign will focus on food, poverty and raising awareness of real topics facing the Welland community today.
From May 1st – 31st, people can donate either a monetary amount or a non-perishable food item through Seaway Mall Customer Service Centre. Those who donate will receive a ballot to be entered to win Canadian trip of their choice (including flights and accommodation) to Calgary, Vancouver, Montreal or Halifax! This contest gives the chance to really celebrate Canada during its 150th year. Starting on May 1st, there will be an empty 32-foot Canadian Flag on display at Seaway Mall’s Centre Court, in hopes that the community will fill in with food donations. The goal is to ‘Build Canada’ through good will and local community support.
The donations will be divided among the three organizations that all work together regularly to provide food banks and additional support service to those most in need in Welland. On May 27th, Seaway Mall will host the One CAN-ada Show, which invites other not for profit organizations in Welland to promote their volunteering opportunities and raise awareness of their services. This will also be an early celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday.
The food and monetary donations raised will assist these organizations in helping families in need and to reach their goal for 2017. Christmas is an extraordinary time for giving and the Welland community has been particularly generous. However, May is the time of year that food bank organizations see a real drop in food donations and for this reason, Seaway Mall has partnered with the local food banks to try and find a solution to ease the pressure this year.
