Community Support Services of Niagara to celebrate 50 years of serving Meals on Wheels in Welland, on June 1, 2017 – Community Support Services of Niagara (CSSN) will highlight the Meals on Wheels program in Welland/Pelham by hosting a celebration to recognize volunteers that have delivered meals for 50 years.
Meals on Wheels in the Welland area is celebrating 50 years of service this year! Imagine that it all started in 1967 with two local women, a Little Red Rider wicker basket, tinfoil plates and three clients. Meals on Wheels started as an answer to the issues faced by those that could not leave their homes and maintain their nutritional needs. As the need to feed more seniors grew, Savina and Isabella approached Sunset Haven for help. Unbeknownst to them, these two women with assistance from Doug Rapelje, Director of Sunset Haven, were the beginning of an organized meal delivery program.
Currently, with successful programs throughout the region, Meals on Wheels has grown to deliver 50 hot meals daily. Meals on Wheels also incorporated a Frozen Meal program that offers deliveries on a weekly basis. Each week, dedicated volunteers deliver 150-200 frozen meals. The Meals on Wheels program is designed to ensure that vulnerable seniors and adults with disabilities receive a nutritious meal and ensures that these individuals are checked on regularly. This vital safety net allows people to remain healthier and independent in their own homes.
Celebrate with us on June 1, 2017, from 2 pm – 4 pm in the Ernest Allen Court (across from Shopper’s Drug Mart) in the Seaway Mall in Welland. Speak to our staff about the wonders of the Meals on Wheels program and view our Meals on Wheels memorabilia. Share in our pride for something that started from basic human kindness. See how we have grown and how we keep growing! Hope to see you there!
We are looking for past and present volunteers, clients and families to help celebrate this event by sharing their stories and giving testimony to what it was like to deliver or receive these meals and how it impacted lives. Please contact Carrie-Lynne Sones 905-788-3181 ext. 27 at CSSN or email firstname.lastname@example.org with your thoughts.
